R4A makes it possible for you to run Ruby natively in Apache. It is built from the ground up to run in Apache Web Server. It includes a dedicated Apache module that lets you run straight up Ruby, embedded Ruby, as well as create custom Apache handlers in which to plug in your own framework. It is more than just a mod_ruby, although you can use it that way as well, if you like.
